I’m Kareem, a woman of faith who is passionate about seeing the Word of God come alive in my own life and in the lives of the women I come in contact with. I LOVE being in the kitchen (yes! I'm an awesome cook).
I absolutely enjoy travelling...mostly to unpopular destinations, and often solo. My faith and my family are my greatest treasures. I’m also the founder of Hummingbird Journeys, and I'd love for us to stay in touch.
14 And David was dancing before the Lord with great enthusiasm, and David was wearing a linen ephod [a priest’s upper garment].
20 Then David returned to bless his household. But [his wife] Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How glorious and distinguished was the king of Israel today, [d]who uncovered himself and stripped [off his kingly robes] in the eyes of his servants’ maids like one of the riffraff who shamelessly uncovers himself!” 21 So David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord [that I did this], who chose me above your father and all his house, to appoint me as ruler over Israel, the people of the Lord. Therefore I will celebrate [in pure enjoyment] before the Lord. 22 Yet I will demean myself even more than this, and will be humbled (abased) in my own sight [and yours, as I please],
2 Samuel 6: 14, 20-22
I was going through photos of my latest missions trip, when I came across this candid capture of me dancing. “When did this happen?” I asked myself. My question was not just about trying to figure out at what moment in time during the specific event, the photo was captured. Instead, my question was about trying to figure out when it was that I became liberated enough to DANCE before my God, my King, my first Husband, my Saviour, my Lord, with reckless abandon.
In 2nd Samuel, we see an account of a great King setting aside the protocol of his day and dancing before the Lord with a heart of thanksgiving and as a most profound expression of worship. In that moment, David’s earthly titles and garments did not matter to him. He was only intent on pleasing God.
Such experiences come only through an intimate encounter with God Himself. They come when we get to the end of our own selves, when we count as nothing all that we think that we are, when we set aside our titles and our earthly accolades, when we make a conscious decision not to focus on what has gone amiss in our lives and to draw close to God in unrehearsed, non-pretentious worship.
In that place of intimacy everything that binds and hinders MUST give way.
Let’s use a simple illustration to break this down.
If you’re trying to punish a child, you take something from them that they treasure or you deny them access to something they like, correct? If you take something that they do not care for or have no interest in, the punishment has no effect.
In the same way, the enemy has very little room to overwhelm you, if the things he has the ability to take from you are not the main focus of your life. He may strike earthly possessions, deny you (albeit temporarily so, and only to the extent that God allows) access to certain earthly places, but even then you won’t be fazed, because your treasure is not in those things.
When we magnify God above earthly matters, when we come to the place where our fellowship with God is more treasured than any earthly experience or possession, our dispositions change, chains break, liberty comes, and we begin to find joy in DANCING before the Lord! despite what is happening around us.
