The Godly Woman Defined
Being in the company of Godly women who have a true heart for God, is always noteworthy. I recently had the pleasure of locking away with some of my sisters for tarry night; an all-night fellowship keen on nurturing Godly women. At these gatherings we pray, worship, seek the face of our first Husband and study His word. It’s a gathering of women desperate for the heart of our King, who find pleasure in just coming away from the busyness of life to sit at His feet and love on Him. These gatherings are rich! refreshing! and spiritually enlightening…to say the least. They also draw you to a place of self-introspection…which is good for any woman who wants to grow in God.
Portrait Of A Godly Woman
We were led to examine what defines a Godly woman. This time around though, God didn’t direct us to look at the lives of any of the women from the “Biblical Hall of Fame”. Instead, unexpectedly, He took us back to basics! Genesis 1: 26, 27, 28 to be exact. Three verses which don’t usually make it to an all women bible study, but here we were.
26 Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]; and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps and crawls on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 And God blessed them [granting them certain authority] and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subjugate it [putting it under your power]; and rule over (dominate) the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves upon the earth.”
Genesis 1:26-28 (AMP)
From this we were able to examine the identifying marks of a Godly woman, as defined by God.
- She exudes the likeness of God (“according to our likeness”)
- She produces more of her kind (“be fruitful and multiply”)
- She lives in Kingdom authority and dominion (“rule over every living thing that moves on the earth”)
Now, before I share some of the simple truths that we were blessed with in our session, let’s note the importance of going back-to-basics.
It’s All In The Foundation
By ensuring that the basics are properly set, we are better positioned to attend to everything else.
Luke 6:47-49 advises us of the importance of laying the right foundations. It is applicable to building property, for education, and it is especially important for building our spiritual lives.
“47 Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and [a]acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who [b]dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the [c]torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the [d]torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
Luke 6:47-49 (NASB)
It is very tempting to race through the fundamentals or skip them altogether. This may be fueled by impatience, laziness, or the misguided notion that the fundamentals are too simple for us to not already know them (given our intelligence where far more significant matters are concerned). Or that they are not relevant enough to amount to any major damage if omitted. It is this mindset that causes so many to be drawn to get rich-quick-schemes, overnight success stories “seemingly so” and the like.
When we fail to set the fundamentals in order, however, our foundations are shaky as a result. While there may not be any severe consequences immediately, when the storms come, everything shakes, and the collapse is great. In spiritual matters especially, our foundation matters, the fundamentals matter, the strength of our foundation determines our ability to withstand the storms of life.
The Crux Of The Matter
A Godly woman exudes the likeness of God.
She reflects God, allowing those she encounters to experience God through her. Through their interactions with her, people see the character of God and are drawn to Him. It is by spending time in the presence of God that she is shaped into His likeness.
A Godly woman is productive.
She is a good steward of the gifts, talents and resources that God has blessed her with. She makes full use of these in ways that glorify God and advance the work of His Kingdom here on earth. Beyond this, she seeks out opportunities to nurture/develop Godly character in others.
A Godly woman lives in Kingdom authority and dominion.
She sets her house and the affairs of her household in order. Chaos and confusion are not the products of her hands. She walks in boldness, confidence, and courage. This can only come from knowing Whose she is and who she is in Him. She has found her identity in Christ and is confident about what He has said concerning her. This is a woman who spends time in prayer and in the Word.
Our Heart
As a Christian woman, it can be overwhelming trying to adhere to numerous standards set by others or by ourselves. It is refreshing to come to the awareness that God Himself, from a heart of love, has provided full insight into His expectations of us without any intention to overwhelm us or to make it unattainable.
